Meg's Magical Rat Rescue

The Costs of Negligence

The costs of irresponsible breeding are very high for the animals involved and those who have to deal with the aftermath.

My rescue for instance, started with a person who had bought 2 rats, a male and a female, and housed them together. This turned into 53 rats in about 3 months. Their solution to this problem, was I take the rats, or they would kill them.

The cost of running the rescue adds up.

Every day: 5-7 jars of baby food = approx. $3.00 which adds up to $21 a week and $84 dollars a month.

Every Week: 2 bags of Yesterdays News = approx. $21 which equals $84 a month.

Every month:  1 bag of Native Earth/ Harlan Teklad Lab Blocks = $38.86 (includes shipping from petfooddirect.com)

Not to mention the incidental costs for laundry detergent and fabric for the cage liners and hammocks. There is also the matter of time. I spend at least 2-3 hours a week cleaning cages, and 15 minutes every night preparing dinner, then more washing dishes and laundry. Any play time is added on to that.

Total cost every week: $51.75

Total cost every month:  $207.00
